White Shark Conservation Genomics

2025 – ongoing

Using conservation genomics to understand population health and long-term sustainability.

In 2025, the Jock Clough Marine Foundation teamed up with Cesar Australia to advance the application of whole genome sequencing as a conservation tool for white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias).

By reconstructing demographic history through time, whole genome sequencing has the potential to provide insight into long-term population trends, the impacts of historical pressures, and a species’ capacity for recovery and resilience.

The Foundation has a strong focus in conservation genomics, recognising its potential to inform evidence-based decision-making and improve outcomes for threatened and ecologically significant species.
