The WA Reef Regen Program - for coral and reef restoration along the WA coastline, is being led by WAMSI with funding from the state government, the Angela Wright Bennett Foundation, and the Jock Clough Marine Foundation.
With increasing occurrences of marine heatwaves due to climate change, WA’s coral reefs are experiencing high levels of bleaching and mortality. There is strong support from the science community, government and the public, to identify practical solutions to help regenerate WA’s coral reefs.
Through the WA Reef Regen program, WAMSI is bringing together scientific expertise and cutting-edge technology, in consultation with Traditional Owners, to partner on a range of innovative regeneration trials on WA reefs.
By building on our existing knowledge with new research and development, we intend to give WA’s coral reefs the best chance to recover, regenerate and build resilience.
The first project in the series is the Nyinggulu Coral Larval Enhancement Trial to collect samples of coral spawning on reefs near Exmouth and mass culture coral larvae in floating larval pools to help regeneration following coral bleaching.
